Before entering politics in 1994 as a member of her state's Ipswich City Council, Hanson owned and operated a fish and chip store. In 1995, she became a member of the Australian Liberal Party, and at the 1996 federal election, she was preselected for the Division of Oxley in Brisbane. After making controversial remarks regarding Aboriginal Australians just before the election, she was disendorsed; nonetheless, she was still listed as a Liberal on the ballot. In the subsequent years, Hanson co-founded One Nation and served as its sole MP before winning the election and taking her seat as an independent. She made an unsuccessful attempt to transfer to the Blair Division during the 1998 federal election.
Following her loss in 1998, Hanson ran unsuccessfully for One Nation's leadership in the 2001 election. She was removed from the party in 2002. In 2003, a District Court jury found Hanson guilty of election fraud; however, three judges on the Queensland Court of Appeal later reversed the convictions. She was imprisoned for 11 weeks before the appeal was heard.
After being freed, Hanson stood for office in a number of state and federal elections both as the leader of Pauline Hanson's United Australia Party and as an independent, until reuniting with One Nation in 2013 and assuming the leadership position once more the following year.
On the basis of his resistance to more money, Hanson won his first election to public office in 1994 and was given a seat on the Ipswich City Council. Before being ousted in 1995 owing to administrative changes, she held the seat for 11 months.
She joined the Australian Liberal Party in 1996 and received their support to run for the House of Representatives seat of Oxley, which is headquartered in Ipswich, in the March 1996 Federal election. The seat was considered to be a Labor stronghold at the time.
